NEW RICHMOND--Thomas Jay Oppy, 41-year-old merchant here, died at 11:25 a.m. Thursday in Culver Hospital in Crawfordsville. He had been hospitalized since suffering a heart attack Jan. 28. Born Sept. 21, 1917, at New Richmond, he was a son of Edward and Ruby Foster Oppy. He was married April 8, 1939, in Indianapolis, to Helen Lane. Mr. Oppy had operated the Oppy Hardware Store here since 1945. He was a member of New Richmond Masonic Lodge No. 604, OES No. 377 and was past president and secretary of CINERS of New Richmond. He was also a former member of the fire department and town board here. He attended New Richmond schools and had worked in Lafayette at the aluminum plant. Survivors include the widow; four daughters, Sandra, Sharon, Shelia and Sonya, all at home; a son, Tommy, at home; his mother, Mrs. Ruby Oppy of New Richmond; two aunts, Maud Foster of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Clarence Davis of Odell; four uncles, Ralph of Louisville, Ky., Tom of Montezuma, Frank of San Antonio, Texas, and Alba Foster of Seattle, Wash., and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father in 1939 and a brother, Leland, who died in 1939. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Servies Funeral Home at Waynetown with Rev. Richard Best, pastor of Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. John Cacharaif of the Christian Church. Burial will be in New Richmond Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Friday

NEW RICHMOND — Funeral services for Tom Oppy were held at Servies Funeral Home in Waynetown, Saturday at 2 p. m., in charge of Rev. Richard Betts of New Richmond Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. John Cachiaris, of New Richmond Christian Church. Mrs. Anna Grenard played "In the Garden" and "Whispering Hope." Pallbearers were Dale Powers, Byron Grenard, Roy MacKenzie, Richard Swick, Marvin Branstetter, Earl Pattengale, H.A. Stonstreet and Dr. R.R. LeGalley. Flowerbearers were Robert Thayer, Roy Geiger, Richard Shotts, Fern Henry, Cliston Allen, Leverett Binns, Byron Alexander, Earl Surber, Homer Gross, Leonard Andrews, Howard Cox, Russell Miller, Ora Newman, Bly Moody, Kenneth Frey, Ollie Libenguette, O.C. Buck and Morris Geiger. Burial was in the New Richmond Cemetery.

Born here, he spent his life in this community and operated the Oppy Hardware Store 13 years. He was married to Helen Lane at Indianapolis in 1939 and was a member of New Richmond Masonic Lodge 604 and OES Chapter 377 and a former member of the Volunteer Fire Department and town board. He was also formerly employed in the aluminum plant at Lafayette. Surviving with the widow are four daughters, Sandra, Sharon, Sheila and Sonya and son Tommy all at home and his mother, Mrs. Ruby Oppy of New Richmond. - kbz
