NEW RICHMOND - Lester Weir Olin, 80, who taught school in this area for 38 years before retiring a decade ago, died at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Ben Hur Home in Crawfordsville. He had been a patient there a month and ill three months. A member of the Elmdale Methodist Church, he farmed in his early life before turning to teaching. He attended school at Elmdale, Valparaiso University, Central Normal College at Danville, Ind., and Wabash College. Most of his teaching career was in Coal Creek Township. In his long career as an educator, Mr. Olin taught at Coal Creek Central and at the former Elmdale and New Richmond schools. During part of his career he served as a coach and directed the only New Richmond team to win a sectional title. That was in 1934. Mr. Olin was born Sept. 23, 1884, at Elmdale to Dr. Leverett W. and Effie Swank Olin. He was married to Tessie Patton at New Richmond March 23, 1904. Survivors include his wife; two brothers, Leverett of Argos and Leland of Rt. 4 Crawfordsville; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Meritt of Rt. 6 Crawfordsville and Mrs. Ruth Crowder of Waukegan, Ill., and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sons, Clair and Paul. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Servies Funeral Home in Waynetown. Revs. Rob James and Arthur Schenck will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery north of Elmdale. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Saturday.
