Mary Barnes was born in Mercer County, Kentucky, March 1, 1824, and moved with her parents, William and Shaddy Barnes, to Parke County, Indiana, near Marshall, in the year 1828 or 1829; on the farm now owned by James Russell. She was one of a family of ten children of which three survive her: Emily Connerly, America Adams, both of Rosedale, and Lafayette Barnes of Rockville.
She was united in marriage with Jacob Oldshue September 7, 1843, and to this union were born eight children, seven of whom survive her: Sarah Seybold, Sidell Illinois; Martha J. Dooley and Margaret E. Farmer, both of Terre Haute; Amanda E. Hanna, Burlingame, Kansas; Robert N. Oldshue, James Edward Oldshue, and John L. Oldshue of Waveland; and William B. Oldshue who died in his infancy. Besides these, she leaves sixteen grand children, twenty great grandchildren and a host of friends. After marriage, they lived near Judson until 1857 when they removed to the farm west of Waveland now owned by J. E. Oldshue. They lived at this place until the year 1892, and then moved to Waveland where they lived until the death of her husband Jacob Oldshue, November 12, 1897, after which she made her home with her children, until her death May 1, 1909, age 85 years and two months, at the home of John L. Oldshue, north of Waveland.
She united with the Goshen Baptist Church when she was 18 or 19 years old and later removed her membership to the Baptist Church at Waveland; at the same time her husband united with the church, March 10, 1894, under the pastorate of Rev. S. K. Fuson. She was a devoted mother; none knew her but to love her. She always lived a consistent Christian life and never gave any but good advice. She was always cheerful and looked on the bright side of life, and passed away with the words on her lips "God's will be done." Her children have only to wait and think of their mother's words, "Meet me above." Funeral services were held at the home on Monday morning by Rev. S. K. Fuson, assisted by Rev. L.F. Galey and Rev. Caldwell. The Baptist choir rendered some of her favorite songs.. (The rest is missing.)
