The serious illness of Major John W. Odell, mentioned in these columns a few days since, resulted in his death on Saturday last. The funeral took place Sunday and was very largely attended. Deceased was eighty five years of age at his death. Rev. R. Hargrave, the venerable pioneer who preached in Odell’s grove forty years ago, and had known the deceased most intimately in all the intervening years, preached the funeral discourse.—Lafayette Journal

Major John Odell, of Odell’s Corners, in Jackson Township, Tippecanoe County, died on the 25th ult., aged 84. Major Odell was a soldier of the War of 1812 and was also in the Black Hawk War. He has lived to see the land he entered at government price worth from $75 to $100 per acre. He was the father of fourteen children, five of whom, four sons and one daughter, he has lived to see comfortably settled in life. He was a member of the M. E. Church, a good and true man in all the relations of life. He represented this county in both the Senate and the House, discharging his public duties with fidelity, and some measure of ability.
