John B. Newlin, 60, of 1202 W. Pike St., veteran Crawfordsville attorney, died at 6:55 p.m. Saturday in Methodist Hospital, a part of the Mayo Clinic, at Rochester, Minn. He had been ill only a few weeks and was transferred to Rochester from Culver Hospital a week ago. Mr. Newlin was a native of Thorntown, born March 16, 1908 to William H. and Cora English Newlin. His father was a minister of the Christian Church who performed the ceremony when Mr. Newlin was wed to Mayme K. Foust on June 3, 1934 in Crawfordsville. A 1925 graduate of Bicknell High School, Mr. Newlin was a 1929 graduate of Indiana University and obtained his master's degree there in 1931. He took postgraduate work at DePauw University and began the practice of law here in the spring of 1933. He was associated in the profession since the 1930s with Ralph M. Bounnell. At the time of his death Mr. Newlin was attorney for the Culver Hospital board of directors and since 1936 had been attorney for the Montgomery County Welfare Department. He also had served as a deputy prosecuting attorney here and was county attorney for years. During World War II and while maintaining his law practice Mr. Newlin also was sports editor of The Journal-Review. In this part time sojourn into newspaper work, which was prior to the time of a local radio station, Mr. Newlin broadcast over public address the play-by-play accounts of sports events via a direct telephone line from the newspaper to the scene of action. These events included Crawfordsville High School games. He also became a familiar voice to fans gathered in the 100 block of South Green Street, in front of the old Journal-Review office, broadcasting election returns. The service attracted large crowds. Mr. Newlin was a member of the First Christian Church and Ouiatenon Club. Surviving are his wife; an aunt, Mrs. Bertha Tinsley of Frankfort, and several cousins. Funeral services are announced for 4 p.m. Wednesday at Hunt and Son Funeral Home, with Rev. Donald Sharp the minister. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. - jlr
