DARLINGTON -- Mrs. Mary J. Needham, 68, longtime resident of Darlington and surrounding community who had made her home in Lebanon for the past 3 1/2 years, died at 8:40 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette. She had been a patient there for 11 weeks. Mrs. Needham had spent most of her married life in the Darlington community. She was member of the Darlington Congregational Christian Church. While in Lebanon she attended the First United Church of Christ there. She was a member of Darlington Chapter 297, Order of Eastern Star. Born in Merom, Ind., south of Terre Haute, on Feb. 7, 1898, she was the daughter of James E. and Maude Cowen Burke. She married Hubert C. Needham in Merom on June 6, 1920. He preceded his wife in death on April 27,1941. Prior to moving with her husband to Darlington, Mrs. Needham had taught school in Merom and had also taught at the Union Christian College there. She was a graduate of Merom High School. During World War I she was a civil service employe in Washington, D.C. She was also preceded in death by two sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Marjorie Hankins of Lebanon and Mrs. Elizabeth (Buddy) Jeffers of Huntsville, Ala.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Bernice Daniels of Merom. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Russell and Hitch Funeral Home in Lebanon. Rev. Homer Hunsinger and Rev. Leonard Siff will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery at Darlington. Friends may call at the funeral home.
