Thomas Earl Nelson, 75, of 207 W. Main St., a resident of Crawfordsville most his life, died Wednesday in Veterans Administration Hospital at Danville, Ill., where he had been a patient five weeks. Mr. Nelson had worked on railroads, at Murphy’s saw mill, a wire mill, brick yard and Montgomery County Sale Pavilion. He took care of race horses and later operated a livestock truck for 16 years and farmed until failing health forced his retirement in 1959. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the First Baptist Church. He was a former member of Youngs Chapel Christian Church. Mr. Nelson was a 25-year member of Eagles Lodge and a member of the Euchre Club at Little House. He was born July 22, 1898, in Tippecanoe County, a son of Thomas and Ellen Jane Thompson Nelson. Surviving are a brother, John; a sister-in-law, Margie; three nieces and a nephew, all of Wells, Minn.; an aunt, Bina Sarver of Crawfordsville, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Also surviving are Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Vannice of Crawfordsville, with whom Mr. Nelson made his home for the past 27 years. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Bowen and Mary Jane Wilson. Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Hunt & Son Funeral Home. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Friday. – jlr
