John Raymond Myers, age 41, a resident of Hillsboro Rt. 1, was killed at about 7 p. m. Monday, June 18, in a one-car crash about three and a half miles north of Newtown on Ind. 341. The mishap occurred near the John Kell residence. Two other occupants of Myers' 1961 model compact station wagon were injured and were taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette. They are Miss Janet Land, age 22, of Attica and her brother, Jerry Land, age 16, of West Lebanon. Miss Land is in the intensive care section of the Lafayette hospital in a serious condition. She suffered a fractured pelvis and internal injuries. Her brother, who sustained abrasions and contusions, is said to be in fair condition. Fountain County Coroner Ralph Nelson, Veedersburg, said the right side of Mr. Myers' chest was crushed and he had suffered internal and facial injuries. Mr. Myers, Fountain County's third traffic fatality of 1962, apparently lost control of the southbound vehicle on a straight stretch of blacktop before it went off the road on the east side and rolled over several times before coming to a stop in a hay field, according to State Trooper Don Wood, who investigated. The car reportedly traveled about 550 feet from where it stopped. All three occupants were thrown out of the car, which Mr. Myers was driving. Mr. Myers was found between the car and fence and Miss Land and her brother were found beyond the car. A haying crew working in the field where the car came to a halt discovered the accident, but did not see it happen. Assisting at the scene were State Trooper Gerald VanMeter and Special Deputy Sheriff Arthur Cruea, Jr., both of Covington. Mr. Myers was born Aug. 2, 1920 in Coal Creek Twp., Montgomery County, the son of Glenn R. and Ruth Servies Myers. In 1938 he was graduated from the Waynetown High School and on March 24, 1940, he married Ruth Larew at Wesley and she survives. John R. MYERS, 42, of Hillsboro RR 1 was killed at 6:55 p.m. Monday June 18, 1962 in a one-car crash about 3 1/4 miles north of Newtown on Ind 341. The accident occurred near the John Kell residence. Two passengers in the car, Janet Land, 22 Attica and Jerry Land 16 West Lebanon were taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette. Miss Lands condition is listed as serious and the boy is in fair. They were brother and sister. Fountain County coroner Ralph Nelson said Myers apparently lost control of the car, which rolled 500 feet. He was thrown from the car and died instantly from a skull fracure and internal injuries. Myers was born Aug 2, 1920 in Coal Creek Twp. He was the son of Glenn R. and Ruth Servies Myers. In 1938, he graduated from Waynetown HS and on March 24, 1940, he married Ruth Larew at Wesley. A farmer and poultry man in Union & Wayne Townships, he was also a member of the Waynetown Christian Union Church, Masonic Lodge 302 for which he served as master in 1949 and the K of P. Lodge. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Diana at home and Nancy Jo of Lafayette and two sons, Carroll of Anderson and John L. at home. Other survivors include the parents, now residing at Brown Valley; and two sisters, Helen Jean Branstetter of Crawfordsville and Rebecca Chadwick of Mace. Funeral services were held Thursday in Servies Funeral Home, Waynetown with Rev. Guy E. Tremaine officiaing assited by Rev. John K. Servies. Burial in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery.
