Benjamin H. Myers, 73, of 214 W. Wabash Ave., retired Crawfordsville businessman and member of the first state championship basketball team at the Crawfordsville High School in 1911, died at 10:10 a.m. Sunday in Culver Hospital where he been a medical patient one week. Born Oct. 12, 1892 in Crawfordsville, Mr. Myers, who operated the J.J. Clements Coal Co. in the 100 block of West Pike Street from 1921 until his retirement in 1957, was the son of Benjamin S. Myers and Frances Brandkamp Myers. He married Hazel Clements Aug. 16, 1920. They were married at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, of which Mr. Myers was a member. Mr. Myers, who was the center on the 1911 team, was graduated from the Crawfordsville High School with the Class of 1912. He attended Wabash College where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity. Mr. Myers was an Army veteran of World War I and 45-year member of Byron Cox Post of the American Legion. He also was a member of the church choir at St. Bernard's many years, member of the Knights of Columbus, Crawfordsville Elks Lodge and a past president of the Crawfordsville Kiwanis Club. Survivors include the widow, a twin sister, Mrs. Minter Mason of Crawfordsville, a niece, Mrs. William Runge, also of this city, and two nephews, Maj. Thomas Mason, in service with the Air Force at Lincoln, Mass., and Robert Myers of Richmond. A daughter, Mabel Frances Myers, died in 1943. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, with Msgr. Henry F. Ward officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Rosary Society services will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hunt and Son Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home, beginning at noon Tuesday.
