PORTLAND ARCH, Ind. - Dean Mycroft, 72, of Portland Arch died about 10:45 a.m. Friday (March 24, 1978) in his car on a rural road southwest of Attica. Fountain County Coroner Robert DeVerter said death was due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Mr. Mycroft had been employed for 34 years as a handgrinder at the Harrison Steel Casting Co. in Attica, retiring in 1965. His hobbies included hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Church of God in Stringtown, Ind. Born Nov. 21, 1905, in Fountain County, he was a son of James and Hulda Nelson Mycroft. He first married Lola Marie Riley, who died in 1939. On Feb. 21, 1942, in Covington, he married Ruby McCollum, who survives. Other survivors include his mother; a son, Devon, at home; two daughters, Mrs. John (Carmen) Boord of Williamsport and Mrs. Wayne (Sandy) Stephens of Bringhurst, Ind.; six brothers, Herchel, Earl and Luther, all of Covington, Vanis of Covington Route 1, Elroy of West Lebanon, and Rudolph of Yucca Valley, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Gene (Wilma) Hay of Covington and Mrs. Edward Burns (Norma) Sammons of Wichita, Tex.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, two brothers and a sister. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. EST Sunday at DeVerter Funeral Home in Covington, with the Rev. Phillip Huey officiating. Burial will be in the Coal Creek Cemetery in Stringtown. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m.
