Murphy - RObert S.

The older residents of this place remember a tall, thin, weakly man residing here some fifteen years ago, who came here as a cabinet maker, a trade that has now entirely disappeared. In connection with his trade, he acted as undertaker and did a fair business for a time, then left and moved north of here, and we had almost forgotten him until Saturday morning when Thomas Stockwell came over to arrange for his funeral, to take place Saturday evening upon the arrival of the 4 o’clock train. But from some cause the trains failed to connect at Frankfort and the body did not arrive until the excursion train for Terre Haute arrived Sunday morning. He died from the effects of a carbuncle in his head. The body was met by a goodly number of his old friends and acquaintances and taken to the I. O. O. F. Cemetery for burial where Rev. Brown of the Friends Church conducted short funeral services and where we learned that Robert S. Murphy was born at Manila, Ind., Aug. 5, 1848, died at Miam_ , June 13, 1902, was married to Sophia M. Rickets, March 31, 1880. To them three children have been given, who with the mother are left to mourn his departure.

He united with the M. E. Church under the ministry of J. L. Boyd and ever after lived a consistent member of said church. The mother and children accompanied the remains and remained a short time renewing old acquaintances with their many friends here. Again we are reminded that older Darlington is fast passing away and soon all things will become new. -s
