THURSDAY, JANUARY 14, 1954

Injuries received in a traffic accident near Jamestown early Wednesday caused the death of Miss Mary Elizabeth Mundorf, 25, New Richmond. She died at 3:50 a.m. The driver of the car in which she was riding, Maxie D. Hodges, 22, was seriously injured. He is a soldier who arrived home from Korea only last weekend. His worst injury is a badly crushed right hand. The accident occurred about two miles east of Jamestown on U.S. 136 at about 12:30 a.m. It was believed the couple were returning from Indianapolis. Hodges was driving a car owned by his brother, Donald Hodges, 1014 E. College St. Investigating officers said Hodges drove off a side road from the south and into the side of a tractor-trailer driven west by Robert Eugene Hudson, St. Paul, Minn. Hudson put on his brakes and the truck jack-knifed. The trailer struck the car driven by Hodges and scooted it down the highway to the west. It finally came to rest with the automobile jammed against a utility pole and the trailer toppled over on the car. An ambulance was summoned from Jamestown and the injured man and woman were brought to Culver Hospital here. Another truck driver was the first person at the scene. Hudson, the truck driver, had a laceration on his forehead and on one leg but was not hospitalized. Both the truck and automobile were badly damaged and were not removed until Wednesday afternoon. The truck was loaded with a window-cleaning fluid and a drain cleaner. State Trooper Harold E. Jackson of Brownsburg investigated the accident, as did the Hendricks County coroner. Hodges was inducted into the service from here about two years ago. He was sent to Korea, arriving there in December, 1952. He returned to Crawfordsville only Monday night and was staying with a sister, Mrs. Nettie Davis, 114 E. Jefferson St. He is a native of Glasgow, Ky. Miss Mundorf was born July 26, 1928, in Los Angeles, the daughter of Theodore and Grace Fruits Mundorf. She had lived in New Richmond most of her life and attended the New Richmond School. She was a member of the New Richmond Christian Church. The survivors include the mother, Mrs. Samuel Haire of New Richmond; a brother, Donald Ralph Mundorf of Franklin; a niece, Beverly Jo Mundorf of Franklin; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Charles Fruits of New Richmond, and a number of uncles and aunts. Funeral services will be held at the New Richmond Christian Church at 2 p.m. Friday, with the Rev. Donald Tharp, pastor of the church, in charge. Burial will be in the Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects at the King & Brown Funeral Home in Linden.
