Murphy - Andrew

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Review, July 9, 1881

On last Tuesday morning as a man by the name of Moore was coming down the track of the LNA & CRR about one half a mile No. of Cherry Grove, he came upon the horribly mangled remains of a man scattered along on the ties. He immediately gave alarm and the Coroner was sent for. After investigation, the remains proved to be those of Andrew MURPHY, son of Patrick Murphy, who lives about a mile and one half No. of Cherry Grove. The deceased had been in this city attending the celebration and was returning home. He had ridden as far as Cherry Grove in a wagon and from there started up the track on foot to his home, but being badly intoxicated, it is supposed he was lying on the track when run over by a special which was coming south between 3 and 4 o'clock in the morning. There being a heavy grade at that point, the train was coming down at the rate of about 40 miles per hour and so failed to see him, nor did they feel any concussion or unusual jar. The body was mangled in a horrible manner, and strong men who had before seen thousands of dead men, at first turned away shuddering from horror. The head was severed from the body and the skull crushed to a jelly. The entrails were torn out and strung along the track and there was not a whole bone in his body. The verdict rendered was the deceased came to his death by being intoxicated and lying on the railroad track, was run over by the cars. - transcribed by kbz
