Herbert Morrison, 76, former president and chairman of the board of Elston Bank & Trust Co., died at 9: 33 p.m. Tuesday in Methodist Hospital at Indianapolis. He resided at 514 W. Wabash Ave. Mr. Morrison became president of the institution in 1941. He added chairman of the board duties in 1965. He relinquished the president's position in 1969, but continued as chairman of the board until Feb. 11, 1975, when he was named honorary chairman. Mr. Morrison joined the Crawfordsville State Bank as a file clerk in 1920. He worked in different positions until he was appointed assistant cashier. In 1927, after the merger of the Crawfordsville State Bank and the Elston Bank & Trust Co., he became associated with the Elston Bank. In 1936, he was elected secretary-treasurer and in 1941 he assumed the presidency. Mr. Morrison was active in community life. He served from 1930-1939 on the City Council and during World War II was chairman of the Montgomery County Finance Committee. For 10 years, he was chairman of the Montgomery County Red Cross chapter. He is a past lieutenant governor of Indiana Kiwanis, a former member of the Indiana Synod Council of the Presbyterian Church, and a former member of the Board of Trustees and an elder of the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church. He finished an unexpired term on the Culver Hospital board, was past president of the Montgomery County Historical Society, and was a former member of the board of the Indiana State Teachers' Retirement Fund. He was past worthy grand patron of the Indiana Chapter of the Indiana Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mr. Morrison served on the board of Wabash College Foundation. Wabash College awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1971 during the 133rd commencement exercises. Mr. Morrison was a past member of the Crawfordsville Utility Board. He served as president of the Indiana Bankers Association; as a member of the Executive Council of American Bankers Association and as a member of the executive committee of the State Division of the American Bankers Association. Mr. Morrison was born at Manchester, S.D., Nov. 10, 1900, to Howard and Lena Morrison. He was graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1919. He also attended Wabash College. He was married to Genevieve Patton in September 1924. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Marian of Indianapolis; and a brother, Paul of Kalamazoo, Mich. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Larimore Wickett and the Rev. Earl Best will officiate. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in Hunt & Son Funeral Home.
