New Richmond, Jan 7 – John N. Morris, aged 68 years, well known farmer was found dead in the basement of his farm home, three-quarters of a mile west of here, Friday evening at 6 o’clock by his daughter, Mrs. Vinton Meharry. Despondency over ill health, which he suffered after the death of his wife two years ago is thought to have prompted him to take his life.  Mr. Morris hung himself from an overhead water pipe, using a leather belt as a noose. Coroner AL Loop of Crawfordsville investigated the case. John N. Morris was born in Warren County Feb 22, 1864 the son of Nelson and Pyla Morris. In 1887 he was married to Louella Graves who preceded him in death April 29, 1930. Mr. Morris had been a resident of this vicinity 51 years and was a member of the Center Christian Church. Surviving are three children, Mrs. Vinton Meharry who with Mr. Meharry lives on the Morris farm; Mrs. Alfred Henderson of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Russell N. Smith of Guaroriente, Cuba; also a sister, Mrs. Laura Bennuell of New Richmond and a grandson, Morris Lee Smith.  Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the residence in charge of Rev. AL Carney. Interment in New Richmond cemetery. - kbz

John N. Morris, aged 68 years, a well known farmer of northwestern Montgomery county, committed suicide Friday afternoon by hanging himself in the basement of his farm home three-fourths of a mile west of New Richmond. He hung himself from an overhead water pipe in the basement, using a leather belt for a noose. He was found dead by his daughter, Mrs. Vinton Meharry, who went to the basement where her father had gone about three o'clock, when the later failed to respond when she called him to supper about five o'clock. Members of the family said that Mr. Morris had been despondent because of continued ill health and had several times threatened to take his life. John Newton Morris was born in Warren county February 22, 1864, the son of Nelson and Pyla Morris. He was married in 1887 to Louella Graves who passed away in 1930. He had been a resident of the New Richmond vicinity for the past 51 years and was a well known and prosperous farmer. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Vinton Meharry who lived with her father, Mrs. Alfred Henderson of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Russell N. Smith of Guaroriente, Cuba. The funeral was held at two o'clock Sunday afternoon at the home and burial was made in the cemetery at New Richmond.
