WAYNETOWN — Mrs. Emma Catherine Moore, former president of the Waynetown State Bank, died Friday morning at 8 o'clock in her home. She was 89 years old, and had been seriously ill from a heart condition for a week. Mrs. Moore was born Dec. 13, 1871, the daughter of Ralph and Catherine Coons VanCleave southwest of Crawfordsville in Montgomery County. She was one of a pioneer family of seven children, and was the last survivor. On Jan. 18, 1891, she married Dennis Carlton Moore at the VanCleave family home in Elmdale. Mr. Moore died June 19, 1945, and Mrs. Moore became president of the bank, one of seven women bank presidents in the U.S., at that time. She served as president of the bank until 1952, then as vice president, and then as a director as her health began to fail. She was also a director of the Citizens National Bank of Crawfordsville until its merger. Mrs. Moore traveled extensively during her life. For the last 33 years, she had been associated with Opal and Herbert Lewellen, who accompanied her on many of her journeys. They have been living at the Moore home for the past year. A member of the Waynetown Christian Church, she was active in religious work. For several years, she has made an annual donation of $100 to each Waynetown church. She is survived by seven nieces and nephews, Homer and Earl Goff of near Crawfordsville, Mrs. Verna Miller of Crawfordsville, L. C. VanCleave of Detroit, Mrs. Lodema Morehouse of Lafayette, Mrs. Minnie Otis and Mrs. Nona Hayes of Tucson, Ariz., Mrs. Claudine Mason of Evanston, Ill., and Leon S. VanCleave of Beloit, Wis.; and two sisters-in-Jaw, Mrs. George VanCleave of Evanston, Ill., and Mrs. Grace VanCleave of Waynetown. Friends may call at the Moore residence in Waynetown after 2 p.m. EST Saturday. Rev. Homer Cole, a former Waynetown pastor now at LaFontaine, Ind., will conduct the funeral services at the Moore residence at 1:30 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in the Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. - kbz
