Richard L. Moore died at his home near the Shades about half past six on Thursday morning. Robert Williams has been staying with him and they had gotten up. Bob was starting a fire in the kitchen and Mr. Moore said he would sit down awhile until the fires warmed up. Death came to him without warning while sitting in his rocking chair. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church this Friday
afternoon at two o'clock.
Richard L. Moore, son of William P. and Mary Moore, was born April 9, 1846 and at his death was aged 86 years 7 months and 22 days. He was one of a family of 5 brothers and two sisters all of whom have preceded him in death. He was born in Lexington Va. His parents passed away while he was quite young. He enlisted in the 1st Va Cavalry, CSA serving under General Lee. He was with him at the time of the surrender and was paroled April 9, 1865 at Clarksburg, W Va. After this event, he with a younger brother, Samuel came to Indiana and was for a time in northern Montgomery County. He became a railroad engineer on the Missouri Pacific Ry, but owing to a serious injury in a wreck which came near costing him his life, he left the service and returned to Indiana, where he engaged in the lumber business owning several mills. In 1894-95 he managed The Shades. He was a man of great mechanical ability, and his services were in demand wherever machinery needed repair. He was married Oct 25, 1883 to Harriet Clark who preceded him in death June 14, 1932. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Fred Underwood of Indianapolis and a stepson, . BM Harbeson of this place. He was one of the oldest members of Waveland Lodge No 300 F& AM joining 48 years ago. Among the associations and friends of which he had many, he was noted for his quick wit always ready to help those in distress. Among those present were: Mrs. Oscar Meyers, Mrs. Ruth Schlagel; Miss Irene Gertin; TH Bennett and JA Whalen of Indianapolis; Mr. & Mrs. Tom Stebbins of Terre Haute, Mr. & Mrs. Parker of Greensburg and Mrs. Stevenson of Waynetown.
