Billy V. Mitton, 81, of Waynetown passed away at 10:42 a.m. Thursday at Seton Specialty Hospital, Lafayette. Born Oct 26, 1927 in Warren County he was the son of Walter Mitton and Hazel (Perry) Mitton. He was a graduate of Veedersburg HS, Veedersburg HS, Veedersburg and was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the US Army as a corporal. In 1948 he married Lois Newman. He lived in Waynetown for 55 years and in Sterling before that. He was an owner/operator of Mitton's Citgo Station at Waynetown for 27 years until 1977 and a rural letter carrier for the US Postal service for 35 years. Memberships included Waynetown Christian Church; Waynetown Masonic Cemetery Board of Directors (president); Waynetown American Legion (past commander); Society of the 1st Division, US Army; Hillsboro Masonic Lodge (past master and member of the Waynetown Masonic Lodge); Fountain County Low 12 - National Association of Rural Letter Carriers; former chief of Waynetown Volunteer Fire Department for 32 years.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Joseph W. (Renee) Mitton of Crawfordsville; a daughter, Deanna Ziegler of Indianapolis; a brother, James (Dorothy) Mitton; a sister, Evelyn Gaylor of Williamsport; and a grandson. He was preceded in death by his sons, Phillip Mitton in 1997; five brothers: Robert, Orville, Everett, Dean and Donald and a sister, Dorothy Phillips. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Waynetown Christian Church, 100 W Vine St, Waynetown with Pastor Chris Lawler officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 4-8 p.m. with Masonic Rites at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Waynetown Christian Church or to the Leukemia Society of America, Indiana Chapter, 941 E 86th St, Suite 100, Indianapolis IN 46240.
