Merrill Durward Mitchell, 50, a well-known employee of Proffitt and Son Funeral Home, died Monday at his home, 109 W. College St., following a heart attack suffered earlier in the day. Before coming to Crawfordsville in 1937, he was a funeral director at Adell, Ia., and Jacksonville, Fla. Born in Van Meter, Ia., on July 27, 1903, he was the son of Ward W. and Gertrude McKissick Mitchell. On Feb. 1, 1928, he married Vera Marie Petersen at Des Moines, Ia. She survives. He was a graduate of East High School at Des Moines, Des Moines University and was also a graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He was a member of the First Christian Church. Survivors include the widow; a daughter, in her senior year at a Danville hospital; the father; two brothers, Russell of Richmond and Jay of Anderson, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother (1947) and one brother, Thayne, in 1940. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p. m. at the Proffitt and Son Funeral Home. Rev. Paul Million will officiate. The place of burial has not been decided upon.
