Mitchell - Mary - 1900

Mary Mitchell, relict of John Mitchell, of Sugar Creek Township, is dead. Thus an entire family has passed away. Uncle John and Aunt Mary have been prominent members of Sugar Creek society almost from its inception and but few of those living there all these years but have enjoyed their hospitality. Their home was the home of the friendless and the motherless. The friend and stranger all received a cordial and Christian welcome. No one was ever turned away hungry. This good couple was permitted to live and enjoy their fiftieth marriage anniversary. Then soon after Uncle John was taken and Aunt Mary gave up her old home to spend her few remaining years in Colfax. Ready and willing, death came to her at a ripe old age after two years of widowhood.  – thanks so much to “S” for all her great obit work on this site

Another pioneer is gone. Aunt Mary Mitchell died at Colfax Monday. Her husband, ‘Squire John Mitchell, died about two years ago. Mrs. Mitchell was a good Christian woman. She had no children of her own, but raised twenty eight orphans and was truly a mother to the orphan and a friend to the widow and needy. She lived in Sugar Creek Township all her life until over a year ago, when she moved to Colfax. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved, especially her niece who lived with her. She leaves two brothers and a host of nephews and nieces and friends to mourn her loss, but our loss is her eternal gain. – thanks so much to “S” for all her great obit work on this site
