For a number of years his health had been failing and for 3 years was confined to his bed during which time he was a patient sufferer. he was the 7th child of John and Lucinda Milligan and was b. on a farm where Waveland now stands. He farmed until old age forced him to retire. At an early age he joined the Presbyterian Church and throughout his life devoted his time and means for Church work. In 1878 he was elected to succeed his father as ruling elder and for 45 years he filled this sacred office with reverence and dignity. He also served as clerk of the session and superintendent of the Sabbath school for many years. Every Wed. his familiar voice was heard in prayer at the midweek service. His faithful life and his ready response to all calls for sympathy and aid have been recognized by all who knew him.

In 1876 he was united in marriage to Sallie LITTLE as this was the centennial year the honeymoon included a trip to Philadelphia. Their family life was happy and congenial. There never having been a child born to this union their great joy was the shelter orphaned children. Those who enjoyed the home were Nellie Greenwood, Otho Glover and Jessie Wilhite. He was very fond of his friends and his house was always open for their visits and for social functions of the Church. Having lived in this community for 3 generations and served them well in many ways, he and his good wife became "Uncle Sam & Aunt Sallie" to everyone in the community.
