Martha Jane Vannice Milligan was born March 26, 1835, near Harrodsburg, Mercer Co, Ky. She was the fourth of six children of Cornelius and Ann Vannice, all of whom have preceded her. In her 19th year she came with two sisters to Waveland. Her first school days were spent in the old log schoolhouse near the old mud Church near Harrodsburg. Later she attended Waveland Collegiate Institute. She united with the Presbyterian Church of Harrodsburg, Ky Aug 1856. She was a charter member of the Ladies Missionary Society organized in 1874 and served continuously as treasurer for almost a quarter of a century. She was married April 8, 1856 to Thomas E. Milligan. To this union were born three sons: Charles Albert, Edwin Thomas and John V. Samuel. Two years following their marriage they built the house in which she died. Here they spent their lives in Christian peace, love and happiness. April 8, 1906 at this home they celebrated the 50th anniversary of their marriage. On July 31, 1908 occurred the call of Mrs. Milligan to his Heavenly Home. She departed this life April 16 at one p.m. leaving behind three sons, one daughter-in-law and three grandchildren, together with a large circle of friends and relatives to mourn her loss. Her life was an illustration of Christian parents and early influence. To have God as her silent partner was her desire all through life. Her life was an exemplification of strong Christian womanhood. Her faith never failed her even in her last hours when suffering seemed to be intense she would call for the ones near her to sing, "Nearer My God to Thee," and to read the beautiful passages from the 23rd Psalm and the 14th of John. The nearer this life seemed to depart, the closer she clung to the other, better, more beautiful life that life beyond. Funeral services at the home on Thursday afternoon were conducted by Rev. J.T. Boyer. Interment at Maple Ridge. - transcribed by kbz
