Milligan - Grace Blatchley

Mrs. Grace Milligan, a former resident of Waveland, met her death at Kendallville, Indiana in a very tragic manner, Friday afternoon. She had for some time been in rather poor health, owing to a nervous trouble from which she had suffered more or less at intervals for the past 10 years. Last Wednesday morning she was found unconscious on the floor of her room at Bainbridge but revived and was so much better, that on Wednesday evening, she accompanied by her daughter, Ruth, went to Indianapolis for Christian Science treatment, and later went to Kendallville, to visit a sister who teaches in the public schools of that place. On Friday morning she again became ill and spent the forenoon in bed, but in the afternoon went with her daughter to visit the schools. While at the school building she seemed to be in a dazed condition, and about 4 p.m., after school had been dismissed, she hurriedly ascended the stairs to the third floor. The daughter following, called to her mother and attempted to attract her attention, but to no avail. Mrs. Milligan rushed to a fire escape and although the daughter made a heroic effort to hold her, she jumped, fell to the ground below and was mortally wounded. The daughter states that the mother never had threatened suicide and that she seemed to be in a dazed condition, and oblivious to all surroundings when she started for the fire escape. She regained consciousness after the fall and called for her children, expressing surprise at her condition and asked what had happened, as though she had had no intention of doing herself bodily harm. Friends think that it was one of those unaccountable accidents that may occur to one while in delirium from bodily illness. The funeral was held at Bainbridge on Sun. Services conducted by Raymond Blatchley, her nephew. Burial in Bainbridge Cemetery --kbz
