VEEDERSBURG – Francis Hugh Miller, 85, former news editor of the Associated Press and Chicago Tribune, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Tall Trees Nursing Home at Covington where he had been a patient for 2½ years. The deceased was a retired attorney and had been associated with the news media since the age of 16 when he started his career with the Veedersburg News. He also worked at the Danville Commercial-News prior to going to Chicago. He was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, at Attica; a 50-year member of the Veedersburg Masonic Lodge, and the Illinois State Bar Association. Mr. Miller was a graduate of Kent College of Law at Chicago. He was a decendent of a long-line Fountain County family. His father was the first druggest in Veedersburg and his grandfather was the first treasurer of Crawfordsville. Born Sept. 28, 1886, he was a son of Frank Hugh and Lucinda Haile Miller. He was married to Margaret Garriott in October, 1910, at Danville, Ill. Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Marylouise Mills of Veedersburg; three grandchildren, Mrs. William (Suzanne) Starkey of Hillsboro, Bruce Mills of Terre Haute and Miss Joyce Mills of Veedersburg, and two great-grandchildren, Scott and Eric Starkey. Preceding him in death was his wife, a son, a brother and a sister. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Parham Funeral Home at Veedersburg. Interment following cremation will be in Rockfield Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home between 7 and 9 p.m. today. – jlr
