NEW MARKET - A New Market man was killed instantly Thursday morning when he was thrown from a panel truck which collided with a big dump truck at the intersection of New Market Road and U.S. 231 east of here. The victim was 48-year-old Donald E. Miles, who was employed by the New Market Lumber Co. and reportedly was part-owner in the company. Miles was thrown out of the right side of a 1965 Ford Econoline van, owned by the lumber company, when the vehicle collided with the dump truck which is owned by Fauber Construction Co. of Lafayette. The victim’s body was thrown several feet from the van. Dr. J. Marion Kirtley, acting county coroner, pronounced the man dead at the scene. Dr. Kirtley said death was caused by multiple fractures of the skull and a broken neck. Miles was traveling east on the New Market Road while the 113-ton dump truck, which was loaded with hot asphalt, was headed north on U.S. 231. The truck was driven by 41-year-old Ralph E. Tyrie of Lafayette Tyrie, although visibly shaken by the accident, apparently escaped injury except minor scratches and bruises. Tyrie, a truck driver for 24 years without any previous accidents, said Miles ran the stop sign at the intersection and drove the smaller van into the side of his truck. “There was nothing I could do . . . he just didn’t stop,” Tyrie told The Journal-Review. County Sheriff Clarence Demoret, who investigated the crash along with State Trooper Richard Pack said he was told that Miles was en route to Indianapolis. The van struck the left front of the dump truck and was spun completely around near the middle of the highway. A large hole ripped in the right front of the van, through which Miles’ body was thrown, was the only damage to the smaller vehicle. The dump truck, which left skid marks for 68½ feet before the impact, continued on up the road for 126 feet before over-turning on its right side, throwing most of its load of asphalt into a ditch and along the embankment. The truck had extensive damage to its left front and right side. Two large wreckers were called to the scene, one of which righted the overturned truck. Investigating officers said skid marks indicated the wheels on the right side of the truck were 4 feet and 2 inches off the highway as Tyrie attempted to avoid the collision. “I just couldn’t do a thing,” the truck driver kept saying. Weeping, he was taken from the crash site by his wife, who had been called to the scene from Lafayette. Tyrie said he had been to Russellville to pick up a load of asphalt from the Fauber firm’s No. 4 plant and was en route to new Int. 74 north of Crawfordsville.
