John Milligan, a pioneer settler of Brown township, died at his home near Waveland, yesterday morning at 8 o'clock. Mr. Milligan was born in Perry Co, Pa. March 29, 1803. In 1814, his parents removed to a farm near Pittsburgh, Pa. where he lived until he was 19 years of age. He then attended school at different places. In 1828, he came to this County and taught school for a few months. He was a clerk for Jonathan Powers for about a year, and in 1830, he sold goods on commission for I. C. Elston, Sr. for 3 years, near where the present town of Waveland is situated. In 1834, he purchased the land upon which the town of Waveland now stands and built the first house ever erected in that town.
A year later, he laid out said town and sold the first lot on Jan. 25, 1835. In 1829, he married Miss Lucinda Elmore, daughter of John Elmore and a sister of C. W. Elmore of this city. He leaves a widow and several children living, one daughter having died several years ago. Mr. Milligan has been a member of the Presbyterian Church over 55 years and an elder for 55 years. He was a brother of Joseph Milligan, of this city, Mr. Milligan was industrious and had accumulated a large fortune, but had lost the greater portion of it by attempting to aid the Anderson, Lebanon and St. Louis Railway. The funeral will take place on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the services to be conducted by Rev. J. H. Sammis. - kbz
