DARLINGTON – Clarence Miles, 77, of Rt. 1, Darlington, died at his home near Darlington at 5:30 a.m. Saturday. He has served several years as a deputy assessor in the area. He was a member of the Darlington Christian Church and had served on the church board. He was a past master of Darlington Masonic Lodge 186 in 1927. He served as sentinel of the Darlington Chapter 297, Order of Eastern Star, during 1953, 1954 and 1955. He was also a member of the Low 12 Club. Born in Hazelrigg, Ind., May 15, 1888, he was the son of Fran and Nann'e Elizabeth Caldwell Miles. He married Aria Walden Ferguson in Jeffersonville, Ind., on Oct. 4, 1909. She preceded him in death on July 30, 1960. The couple began housekeeping in Indianapolis but had lived in the Darlington area the last 55 years. Mr. Miles was also preceded in death by three brothers. Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Albert Lily of Norfolk, Va., Mrs. Frank Steurer of Reno, Nev., Mrs. Kenneth Williams of Indianapolis, Mrs. Norman Hankins of Stockwell and Mrs. Joe Kirk of Rt. 1, Darlington; a son, Frank Wesley Miles, who resided with his father; 13 grandchildren and a brother, Guy Miles of Crawfordsville. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Bright Funeral Home in Darlington. Rev. Clyde D. Wake of Stockwell will officiate. Burial will be in the Darlington Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home, where last rites of the Masonic Lodge were conducted Sunday night. – jlr
