CATES — Ben E. Merryman, 84 and a retired farmer of Rt. 2, Kingman, died at 4:25 p.m. Monday in St. Elizabeth Hospital at Danville, Ill. He had been a patient there for three weeks and had been in ill health for many years. Mr. Merryman was a life resident of Fountain County and lived in the Cates area for 55 years. He was a member of the Modern Woodsmen of America. Mr. Merryman was born April 21,1891 at Covington, a son of James and Anna Fishero Merryman. He was married to Mary Snoddy, May 29, 1912. She preceded him in death Feb. 13, 1971. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ray (Martha) Staggs, with whom he made his home; two sons, William Randolph of Rt. 1, Hillsboro and Harold Leon of Veedersburg; a brother, Paul of Covington; a sister, Mrs. Robert (Alma) Nicklas of Covington; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, a brother and a sister. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home at Covington, with the Rev. Robert Tharp officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Covington. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Wednesday. ==typed by Walt W
