Olin Meritt, son of Virgil and Grace Meritt of Rt. 1, died suddenly of a heart attack Tuesday evening at his home in Kokomo, where he was a grade school principal. Mr. Meritt had been playing basketball with some of the grade school boys at McKinley School in Kokomo after school Tuesday when he became over tired. He returned to his home at 1925 S. Washington St. and died shortly after 6 p.m. the same evening. Born on a farm near Crawfordsville Jan. 8, 1914, he was a graduate of Wabash College and had a master's degree from Ball State College. He began teaching at Central School in 1937 and the same year went to Kokomo High School. In 1955 he was named principal of Wallace School and in 1957 principal of McKinley School. He took on the additional duties as principal of Lincoln School in 1959. In addition he taught a science course at the Indiana University Extension in Kokomo. He is a member of Phi Delta Kappa education honorary fraternity, all school teachers organizations, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge and the Grace Methodist Church. Survivors, besides the parents, include his widow, the former Miss Julia Hornback; three daughters, Maureen, Elaine and Pamela, and a brother, Eugene, of near Elmdale. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Fenn Funeral Home in Kokomo. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery north of Elmdale. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Thursday.
