Hugo S. Merrell, 69, retired painter and paper hanger, died at 10:30 a.m. Monday in his home, one mile west of here. Born Nov. 21, 1888, in Montgomery County, Mr. Merrell was the son of John D. and Margaret Johnson Merrell. He married Bessie Utterback Dec. 24, 1913 at Wingate. They began housekeeping in the Elmdale neighborhood. Mr. Merrell attended grade school in Montgomery County and the Waynetown High School. He was a member of the Elmdale Methodist Church. Surviving are the widow: four sons, Donald, Robert and Maurice Merrell, all of Crawfordsville, and Eugene Merrell of Fresno, Calif.; four daughters, Mrs. Clarence Fox of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Max Brown of Speedway City, Mrs. Robert Cunningham of San Jose, Calif., and Mrs. Raymond Meyers, of Waynetown; three brothers, Avery Merrell of Wingate, Ansel Merrell of Waynetown, and Reuben Merrell of Muncie, 17 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p. m. Wednesday at the Bright Funeral Home with Rev. Henry H. Karg officiating, assisted by Rev. R. T. Luddin. Burial will be in the Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p. m. Tuesday.
