WINGATE --- Eugene Meritt, 48-year-old farmer, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at his home north of Elmdale. He was a son of Virgil C. and Grace Olin Meritt and was born at Elmdale July 19, 1916. He was a 1934 graduate of New Richmond High School and was wed April 27, 1941 to Eileen Rosen of Liberty Chapel. Mr. Meritt was a member of Center Church north of Elmdale and was serving the church as deacon and trustee at the time of his death. He also was president of the Center Circle Class. He had farmed all his life in Coal Creek Township. Surviving are the wife; a daughter, Sandra Jean, attending Lafayette Business College; a son, Michael R., at home; the mother, Mrs. Grace Meritt of Rt. 6 Crawfordsville; a foster sister, Mrs. George Sheets of Ladoga, and a foster brother, Eugene Haase of California. The father and a brother, Olin, preceded Mr. Meritt in death in 1960. Funeral services are announced for 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Servies Funeral Home in Waynetown, where friends may call. Rev. Frank Williams of Frankfort, pastor of Center Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery north of Elmdale.

Survivors include the widow, Eileen Rosen Meritt; a son, Michael, and a daughter, Sandra. The body was taken to the Servies Funeral Home in Waynetown. Source: Crawfordsville Journal Review 5 Dec 1964 p 9 typed by Walt W WINGATE — Funeral services for Eugene Meritt were held Thursday afternoon at the Servies Funeral Home in Waynetown. The minister was Rev. Frank Williams of Frankfort, pastor of Center Church where Mr. Meritt held membership. The music was by Mrs. Mary Mullen and included "The Lord's Prayer," "Beyond The Sunset," "Just As I Am" and "Ivory Palaces." The honorary pallbearers were Arthur Harpel, Forrest Lane, Roy Bunnell, Arkie McAlister, Raymond Swick and Robert Banta. Active pallbearers also helping with the flowers were C. W. Banta, Lloyd Zachary, Paul Fulwider, John Watts, William Dehne and Forrest Swank. Interment was in Oakland Cemetery.
