Fred MELVIN, the son of CH Melvin who runs a saw mill north of Bluff Mills died this week of the influenza in NY. He joined at the Great Lakes Training Station but had been transferred east.

Fred Melvin, son of Mr .and Mrs. Charles Melvin died of pneumonia and influenza in a NY hospital Sunday morning. When he enlisted in the navy last June he was sent to Great Lakes training station and from there transferred to Hampton Roads, Virginia. He was born Jan 23, 1897, in Kansas, later moving to the county near Alamo with his parents. His father left Saturday for his bedside as he had already received word of the seriousness of his son's condition but it is not known whether he arrivved in time to see him before he died. He was a member of the Red Men's Lodge at Alamo and was one well loved and highly esteemed for his jovial and congenial disposition. = kbz

The body of Pvt. Fred Melvin, 21 years old who died of Spanish influenza at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Saturday has been received at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Melvin three and a half miles southwest of Alamo and the funeral will beheld at 10:30 o'clock Thursday morning, Rev. Dunan of the Baptist Church will officiatethe Alamo Liberty Guards will attend the services in a body and the exercises at the grave will be conducted by the Red Men of which order he was a member. Interment will be at the Alamo Cemetery. Pvt. Melvin enlisted last June and was assigned to duty at the Brooklyn navy yards - kbz
