Father Hugh Meharry died of paralysis at Paxton, Ill on
Saturday last while on a visit to his daughter, Mrs. Rev. JA Kumler. His
remains were brought to this county and interred in the family cemetery near
Meharry Grove. Father Meharry was the oldest member of the Meharry family,
being 84 years of age at the time of his death. He was an honest, upright
gentleman of firm views and liberal education. He has been a member of the
Methodist Church for the past 76 years. He was a very chariable gentleman and
many public institutions were favored by him, Central Tennessee College for the
education of freedmen at Nashville, having been largely endowed by him. Father
Meharry spent a long and useful life.
