The death of Alexander W. Meharry occurred last Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock at the family residence in Lafayette. He died after a prolonged illness with a complication of diseases. His condition, however, did not become serious until ten days before his death. Mr. Meharry was born at Shawnee Mound, June 20, 1844, and was the son of Hugh Meharry, one of the pioneers of Indiana. He attended DePauw university until his junior year when he went to Chicago to take a commercial course, later returning to Shawnee Mound to look after his farming and business interests. In 1891 he, with his family, moved to Lafayette, but still retained his farm interests directing them personally until death. He is survived by a widow and one daughter, Mrs. John R. Sickler, of Frankfort. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. W. H. Adams of Chicago., Mr. Meharry was an active member of the Methodist church and was identified with the Shawnee Mound church until he went tb Lafayette, when lie became a member of Trinity church, and was placed on the official board. He was a member of the Lincoln club and was holding 'the office of vice president at the time of his death. He was a member of Lafayette Lodge No. 51, K. of P. and was at one time a member of the uniform rank of that order. Mr. Meharry was one of the most highly honored citizens of Lafayette and his death is a distinct loss to the community. He belonged to one of the oldest families in the state whose name has always been associated in educational and religious work. He was a man of splendid character and high ideals. The funeral services were held at the residence last Friday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Saturday morning brief services were held in the Shawnee Mound church at 11 o’clock, with interment in the Meharry cemetery near bis boyhood home.   ---Kbz
