Wingate, Jan 8 -- Roland E. MERRITT 73, retired college English professor and native of this vicinity succumbed to pneumonia early Wednesday in a hospital at Logansport in which city he had resided since retiring 4 years ago. Professor Merrit was born near here, a son of John and Mary Merrit, and later moved with his parents to a farm on the Cass-Fulton County line. Obtaining a teaching certificate from the Marion Normal college, he taught in several Cass Co schools and founded Metea HS. Receiving AB & MA degrees from Indiana University, he became head of the English Dept at Highland Park College, Des Moines, Iowa and 4 years alter took a similar position at Iowa Wesleyan College. He retired 4 years ago. The widow and a brother survive. The funeral was held at the Metea Baptist Church Friday at 2 p.m. with interment in Metea Baptist Cemetery.
