Source: Crawfordsville Review,Thursday January 6, 1916

Phillip MELLA, aged 80 years and a veteran of the Civil War died at his home here (Thorntown) last night (Jan 4) about 6:30 hardening of the arteries being the immediate cause of death. The deceased had been ill for some time but his condition was never regarded as serious and he was on his way to the supper table last night shortly before the above mentioned hour when he collapsed and lived only a very short time thereafter. Medical aid was summoned at once but the attending physician could do nothing for the stricken man and he passed quietly away surrounded by kinsfolk and friends. Mr. Mella was one of the most widely acquainted residents of Thorntown where he was held in high esteem by all. For many year he was employed as a buggy trimmer by the Oldendorf company of that place and later became identified with clothing store in Thorntown remaining in that capacity until his death though he retired from active service a number of years ago. Phillip Mella was at one time a resident of Crawfordsville being employed by the Miller Carriage Co. and is well remembered by many of our older citizens. His widow and 5 children survive: Mrs. Carrie Curry; William Mella; Janette Mella of Thorntown; Mrs. Laurimore of this city and Meta of California. Funeral services will probably be held Friday.
