WINGATE — Elbert McWhinney, 72, a resident of Wingate for many years, died at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Indiana State Soldiers Home in Lafayette. He had lived at the home for several months. He was born in Montgomery County on May 30, 1888, to John and Ann Thomas McWhinney. He served in World War I from May 24, 1918, to April 4, 1919. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Fern McWhinney, 212 W. Main St., Crawfordsville, and two nephews. A brother, Jess, and three sisters, Kate, Viola and Lucetta, preceded him in death. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Thursday at the Servies Funeral Home in Waynetown. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday with Rev. Carl Nesbit of the Wingate Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
