McNeal mother of Mike 1874
Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Thursday, 19 March 1874
Mike McNeal, a boy, was wanted by the police of Crawfordsville, Indiana, for theft. About midnight a Mike McNeal was found, whose mother so stoutly protested his innocence, and was so stricken by the accusation, that the officer consented to go back to headquarters and see if there had been some mistake. There they learned that they had hit upon a namesake, and that the thieving Mike McNeal was another boy. Returning to tell the mother of the error, they found her dead. The shock had helped heart disease kill her. It would perhaps be useless for us to state now, after the statement made three weeks ago, that there was no foundation for this story when it first appeared and that there is none yet.
