David William McMurtry was born in Parke Co Indiana on March 26, 1836 and died at his home in Waveland Oct 3, 1910; aged 74 years, 6 months and 8 days. He married Martha Cooper, Nov 8 1858; to this union was born 6 children: Mary E. of Waveland; Mrs. Margaret Noel of Rockville; William A. of Mexico, Mo; Sophronia of Owatanna, Mn; Prof. James G. of El Campo, Tx and Clarence S. of Marshall. He professed a hope in Christ and united with the Bethany Church at about 16. Nine years ago he transferred his membership to Waveland. In 1875 he was ordained an elder, which office he held at the time of his transition. He is survived by his life long companion, 6 children; a brother, the foster children, many relatives and a host of friends; all of whom will retain pleasant memories of a life of kindly deeds and of devotion to him whom he called Lord and Master. He was indeed a living epistle known and read of all men. A good man has passed into "The Land of the Blessed," we will follow on. The fun. was from the home on Wed morning at 10; conducted by Rev. Josephus Lathom, Presby. pastor at Kirklin, Ind assisted by Rev WH Fertich of the Meth. Church. Interment at Bethany Cemetery, Marshall.

Waveland, Oct 3 -- This morning at ten o'clock the spirit of David William McMURTRIE passed from his body and the sojourn of a good man on this earth ended. Mr. McMurtrie had been ill for several months of a complication of diseases and his condition has been serious since last Thursday. He was born March 16, 1826 near Marsha,, Parke County. On Nov 1, 1858 he was married to Martha COOPER and she with six children survive him. The children are Mary of Waveland; Mrs Margaret Noel of Rockville; Sophronia of Owatonna MN; William of Mexico, MO; Prof IG McMurtrie of Al Canto, TX and Clarence of Marshall. One brother, John McMurtrie of Marshall is also living. Mr. M. was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and for many years an elder in that denomination. He lived the life of a complacent Christian and his life was an open book known and responded to all men. The time for the funeral has not yet been made.

David McMurtry and Martha Eleanor Cooper were married near judson where they were both born and raised. November 4, 1858 at the residence of William Strain, an uncle of the bride, by Rev. W. T. Allen, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. They are the parents of six children. The four present were: Mary E. McMurtry, Margaret J. Noel of Rockville, Clarence S of Marshall and Sophronia E. McMurtry of Owatanna, Minnesota. William of Mexico, Mo and Prof. Clarence McMurtry of Parsons College, Fairfield, Iowa were absent. Two guests at the wedding were present on Wednesday; John McMurtry, a cousin of Mr. McMurtry and Mrs. Sarah McCampbell, a cousin of Mrs. McMurtry. 24 relatives and friends at dinner with them at noon. Quite a number of friends called in the afternoon.

The children are Mary of Waveland, Mrs. Margaret Noel of Rockville, Sophronia of Owatonna, Minn., William of Mexico, Mo., Prof. I. G. McMurtry of Al Canto, Tex., and Clarence of Marshall. One brother, John McMurtry of Marshall is also living. Mr. McMurtry was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian church and for many years an elder in that denomination. He lived the life of a consistent Christian and his life was an open book known and respected of all men.’ Funeral services were held this forenoon at 10 o’clock at Waveland. Internment at Bethany Cemetery. -
