Mrs. Sarah Denning McIntyre, aged 73 years wife of Judge DT McIntyre, United States Commissioner, passed away this morning at 5 o’clock at the family residence, 1301 Charleston Avenue (where?). Death was due to heart trouble, after an illness of four weeks. Mrs. McIntyre was born at Rome, Ashtabula County, Ohio June 4, 1844. She had been a resident of Mattoon since December, 1861. Mrs. McIntyre’s early education was received in Ohio. She received an AM degree from a woman’s college at Terre Haute. Judge and Mrs. McIntyre were married in Mattoon on Sept 10, 1863. To them were born four children. The oldest and the youngest child died. Surviving are Miss Katherine McIntyre, a daughter living at home, and a son, Lorenz J. McIntyre residing in Montana. Surviving also are two sisters, Mrs. GW Rhoades, Shelbyville and Mrs. DJ Whiting, Northfield, Minn. Mrs. McIntyre was active in church work all her life, having been a member of the First Presbyterian Church of this city. She served as church organist for 49 years, 32 years of which were in the service at the First Presbyterian Church. For a number of years she lead the choir also. In addition to her work with the church, she took an active interest in several of its organizations. She had been serving for a number of years as secretary and treasurer of the Women’s Foreign Missionary Society. She had entered upon her 20th year as recording secretary for the Women’s Foreign Missionary Society, Synod of Illinois. Mrs. McIntyre was active in local club life also. She was the president of the Ladies’ Reading Club, an office she had held for 8 years – Journal-Gazette Aug 7.
