John McGuire, 70 years of age, was instantly killed Sunday afternoon when he was struck by northbound Monon passenger train No 6 on the Sugar Creek Bridge just north of Crawfordsville. McGuire and the little son of CR Norton were crossing the bridge when they saw the train approaching. The boy succeeded in running from the bridge to safety. Realizing he could not escape from the bridge Mr. McGuire laid down on the ties of the bridge, hoping he might be safe. The engine struck him, ground his body under the wheels and then tossed the body into the stream. Fishermen nearby witnessed the tragedy and rescued the body, but life was extinct. The train was in charge of Engineer Ball, Fireman DK Peyton, Conductor Richard Strain and Brakeman lawson A. Campbell. The accident delayed the train’s arrival in Lafayette 25 minutes. - kbz
