McElroy - Birdy
Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal, Thursday, 18 September 1873
A most heart rending accident occurred yesterday morning, which cast a general gloom over the community. Birdy McElroy, a bright lad of fifteen years, was at the warehouse of his father, Henry McElroy, assisting in some way about the work, when he mysteriously met his death. His father had seen him a short time before, probably a half an hour, and the next time he met him he was lying unconscious on the brick pavement near the engine furnace. There is a platform probably five feet high about the brick flooring, and the supposition is that Birdy fell off, striking upon his head, or was caught by the machinery and thrown off. He was bruised on both sides of the head and the inner side of his left arm considerably bruised; this latter inquiry gives rise to the supposition that he was caught in the machinery. It is also thought his neck was broken.—Attica Ledger -s
