Owen W. McDaniel, superintendent of the Orphan's home in this city, died suddenly at that institution Saturday night about 10 o'clock, aged 71 years. Mr. McDaniel was taken suddenly ill about 4 o'clock that afternoon with acute congestion of the stomach and bowels. Everything possible was done to relieve him, but he gradually failed until death came. Funeral services were held from the Home this (Monday) afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. JM Alexander of the Christian Church and interment was made in Oak Hill. Mr. McDaniel was born in Indiana Jan 11, 1840 and came to this city several years ago. For 13 years he had served as superintendent of the Orphan's Home here and conducted the affairs of his office in a most efficient manner. He was the son of William and Sarah Ramey McDaniel of Kentucky. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Catherine McDaniel and one son, Prof. Charles May McDaniel of Hammond. Prof. McDaniel was at the bedside of his father when death came. He had gone to Indianapolis Saturday morning and came to this city that evening to pay his parents a brief visit before returning to his duties as head of the Hammond Public Schools. Soon after his arrival here he was notified that his father was ill and hastened to his bedside. Prof. McDaniel is a graduate of Wabash College and member of the board of trustees. Mr. McDaniel was a member of the Christian Church for 38 years and was active in the work of that denomination. There was a large attendance at the services held in his memory this afternoon and there is widespread regret at the death of this estimable man. Mrs. Hesler and Mrs. Nye sang at the services this afternoon. The pall bearers were John A. Booe; D.P. Smith; JW Stroh; JQ Clark; A. Eastlack and Chas. Miller. - transcribed by kbz
