Monroe Cavin McCormick, whose death was noted last week, was born near Waveland, Nov 4, 1849. He received his education in the common schools, the Waveland Academy and DePauw University. He engaged in mercantile business at Portland Mills, Waveland, Thorntown and Argus, at which place he became interested in banking, and was bookkeeper and cashier of the Argus Bank. He was placed in charge of a branch bank at Culver, and next organized the First National bank of Knox, of which he was cashier for 15 years. He was also interested in a bank at Hamlet. In June 1881 he married Miss Katie F. Gray, of Thorntown. Two children were born to them, of whom one, Harland survives. Mrs. McCormick also survives her husband. Mr. Mcormick was a member of the ME Church and the Masonic Order. He took a deep interest in politics and was much sought after as a public speaker. The malady which caused his death developed about a year ago. He continued his work, however until in October when he disposed of his interest in the bank and went to Chicago where an apparently successful operation was performed. Complications made a second operation necessary about 3 weeks before his death. Besides the wife and son he leaves two brothers and two sisters: Shelby and Miss Emily McCormick, of this place; JO McCormick of Williamsport and Mrs. Sarah Vaught of Lebanon. The son is living on a claim in Nevada 18 mi. from a railroad station and it was not possible to get the word to him in time to be present. Those present at the funeral from a distance were: Mrs. MC McCormick; Mr. & Mrs. Furstburg and Rev. Mr. Kimberlin of Knox; Rev. Mr. Strecker of Covington; JO McCormick of Williamsport; Mr. & Mrs. White of Frankfort; John Bilbo of Russellville (sorry rest of obit. gone ... or perhaps this is the end of it but don't think so) -- kbz
