Mrs. Shelby W. McCormick died at her home on East Howard Steet about two on Tuesday afternoon. She had been ailing for several months with diabetes which assumed an acute form within the last few days. The funeral services were conducted at the home on Thursday morning by Rev. Thomas G. Pearce, assisted by Rev. U.M. Creath. The numerous floral offerings showed the esteem in which she was held. The body was interred in Maple Ridge. Mary Margaret Spencer was born in the village of Portland Mills, November 9, 1859. She was the youngest child of Robert and Mary A. Spencer. Her early education was acquired at the villlage of Portland Mills and in the district schools of that vicinity. After leaving the district schools she spent more than a year at the high school in Rockville and subsequently graduated from the high school of Albia, Iowa with the class of 1881. Later she attended the Central Normal College at Danville, Indiana. She taught three successful terms of school, two in Parke and one in Putnam County. September 19, 1863, she was married to Shelby W. McCormick at the temporary home of her mother in Bloomington, Indiana, by the late Dr. Lemuel Moss, then President of Indiana University. After their marriage, she and her husband took up their residence on the old McCormick homestead north of Waveland, and lived there most happily for 18 years, after which they moved to this town. There were born to them two daughters, Mary Drew, now Mrs. Wilber Spencer and B. Shirley McCormick. She united with the Presbyterian Church at Rockville in the winter of 1876-77. She subsequently had her membership transferred to the Presbyterian Church at Albia, Iowa and after moving to Waveland she transferred her membership to the Church here. She was an affectionate daughter and sister, a faithful wife and devoted mother and a true friend and consistent Christian. It was her constant care to contribute to the comfort and happiness of all with whom she came in contact. Her death makes a vacancy in a home and family that can never be filled and in the social and church circles she will be greatly missed. She leaves a husband, two daughters, aged mother, sister, brother and wide circle of relatives and friends to mourn her loss. - kbz
