Emily Jane McCORMICK was born Aug 18, 1847 at the McCormick homestead near Waveland. She is the last survivor of the family of 10 children born to Preston and Mary Ann McCormick. She attended the Presbyterian Academy of Waveland and the Valpariso Conservatory of Music. The incentive thus received followed her through life. Favored with a strong physical constitution a brilliant mind, and a keen sense of humor, her indornitable will, her tireless energy and her high ambitious drive thus incessantly towards definite goals. She was unselfishly devoted to her sister and her sister's children. She traveled rather extensively and was familiar with the interesting spots from coast to coast. She had listened to speakers of world wide reputation and years after could give a detailed review of a lecture or sermon. She read widely and memorized a quotation daily. Friends recall the open book before her while attending to other duties. She was a most regular attendant at the services of the Presbyterian Church to which she belonged until she was almost 90. As sight, hearing and muscular activity one by one succumbed to extreme old age, her last years were saddened. She never lost her interest in current affairs and never admitted that she was ill. After she was fatally stricken, she had an heroic effort to send a phone message. Shortly after, she relapsed into unconsciousness and on Sat morning, Feb 21 death came so easily that the watchers could scarcely discern the last breath. Today she rests in the Eternal Infinite Love is hers and her soul is satisfied. Impressive funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Machledt Funeral Home. The quartette of Mr. Banta; Dooley; Lydick and Mrs. Hester rendered two beautiful selections. Mrs. Hessel played There's a Land that is Fairer Than Day with variations followed by a brief sermon by the Pastor Rev. Egon Hessel. Burial at Maple Ridge Cemetery. - kbz
