Ray E. McCollum,. 85, Veedersburg, died 11:50 p.m. Friday in Veterans Administration Medical Center, Danville, Il. Mr. McCollum retired from FI Mitchell Construction where he worked as an auto-truck mechanic. In his early years he owned and operated McCollum Pool Hall with his father. He served in WWII in the 1st and 3rd Armies in Europe. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in France and later was awarded the Oak Leaf Cluster to the Purple Heart for wounds suffered at Luxembourg during action on the Moselle River. His memberships included Covington Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was born April 24, 1918 at Hillsboro to Samuel and Gertrude Sexton McCollum. His first marriage was to Sally Bowers. He later married Patti Abbott. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Jo Foley, Veedersburg and Janie Gary, Elkhart; four stepsons, Glen, Paul, John and Eric McKinney; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. A daughter, Bonnie; a son, Freddie; two brothers and five sisters are deceased. Graveside services are scheduled 1 p.m. today in Waynetown Masonic Cemeter with Rev. Don Smothers officiating. Friends may call 12:30 - 1 p.m. today in the cemetery. A military service will follow the service. Dickerson Funeral Home, Veedersburg is in charge of arrangements. - kbz
