COVINGTON - A young Fountain County man who was active in 4-H affairs throughout the county died Monday in a grain bin accident. It was the second farming-related fatality in this county this year. Chuck McCollum, 28, Rt. 3, Covington, reportedly suffocated Monday when a large quantity of grain fell on him. The accident occurred in a grain bin on the McCollum farm about a mile east of here. McCollum was a member of the Farm Bureau Association, Covington Booster Club, Fountain County 4-H Council, American Hereford Association and Osborne-Prairie Christian Church. His hobby was raising and showing cattle. He was a 1968 graduate of Covington High School and attended Danville (Ill.) Junior College. He was engaged in farming and was a salesman for the Bisland Implement Co. He was born Dec. 17, 1949, at Crawfordsville, a son of Wynogene McCollum and the late James W. McCollum. He was married Sept. 7, 1969, to Linda Fields, who survives. Other survivors are a daughter, Lori Jean; a son, C. J.; a sister, Mrs. Tom (Linda) Holt of Rt. 3, Covington; a paternal grandmother, Mrs. Inez McCollum of Rt. l, Kingman; two nieces; and several aunts and uncles. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Deverter Funeral Home at Covington. The Rev. Tom Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in Osborne-Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 4 to 9 Wednesday at the funeral home. - jlr
