Dr. C.M. McGown, who will be remembered by many Waveland  people, died in Chanute, Kansas, September 19. Mrs. McGown was a  daughter of Abraham Moore. The Chanute Tribune says: "Perhaps  there was not in the west an older practicing dentist than Dr.  McGown was when he sold his business here September 15 to Dr.  D.L. Harper of Kansas City. Dr. McGown was eighty years old on  May 5 last. A year ago at the meeting of the state dental  association at Pittsburg, Dr. McGown was made an honorary member  and was honored as the oldest practitioner in the state. Dr.  McGown was born in Bowling Green, Ky., May 5, 1845. Some forty  years ago he moved to Thayer, then to Independence and then, with  his family, to this city twenty-three years ago. He practiced  dentistry from young manhood, but in his younger days did some  medical practice. While at Thayer, Dr. McGown took active  interest in politics. He was mayor of that city two years and  served as postmaster four years, during the Cleveland  administration. He also at one time was interested in a newspaper  at Thayer. Dr. McGown retired from the practice of his profession  a week ago, selling his office at 3-1/2 West Main street to Dr.  Harper. Dr. McGown had just opened an office in the same building  and expected to fit glasses and do eye and nose surgery. He was  in his usual health until a day or so before the break came.  Friday night Dr. McGown went to Odd Fellows meeting and was quite  well when he returned home. Dr. McGown was prominent in lodge  work and always took much interest in his Church. He was a  lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and was a regular  attendant. He was a member of the Masonic bodies, Odd Fellows,  Easter Star and Rebekkahs. Mrs. McGown survives, also a son and  one daughter. The son is Harry I. McGown of Shreveport, La. Mrs.  Letha Hawkins, of this place, is the daughter. Dr. McGown was the  oldest professional man in this section. He represented the old  school, was a man of fine type and will be missed not only by the  family, but by hosts of acquaintances in this section." - typed by kbz
