Wm McClure, who resided three and one half miles northwest of Wingate, attempted suicide Wednesday morning at 3 o’clock, but a late telephone message to The Journal states that Mr. McClure will recover. He has been in ill health for some time and has not acted as if he were in his right mind. Tuesday he retired, not complaining worse than usual, but at three o’clock the family was awakened by a shot. One of Mr. McClure’s sons arose and ran out to find his father lying near the woodshed in a pool of blood. A 32 caliber rifle lying near told the story. Dr. Claypool was called from Newtown, who dressed the wounds and pronounced them not fatal. The bullet struck back of the ear and only made a scalp wound. It is thought that as Mr. McClure pulled the trigger, the barrel of the gun was deflected in such a manner that the bullet did not enter as he had wished.
Mr. McClure is past 55 years of age and was married two years ago to his second wife. His two sons live with him on the farm and both were present when the attempt of their father’s self destruction was made. His ill health, together with a sort of hallucination that his business affairs were in bad shape, are ascribed as the causes for the act. Mr. McClure is a distant relative of City Clerk James A. McClure.
